• Earthdance Arcosanti

    Earthdance Arcosanti

Earthdance is a global synchronized music and cultural festival dedicated to providing support to international peace. It is noted for having locations in San Diego, Sao Paolo, Vancouver, London, and other major (and minor) cities across the world. I designed all the promotional material, marketing, and web presences for the Earthdance festival taking place at Arcosanti in 2009. Given a blank slate to work with, I focused on the unique architectural, desert, and solar themes of the festival's location, repeating various aesthetics and motifs to create a consistent cross-medium marketing campaign reflective of not just the Earthdance festival itself, but this particular one's theme and locale.

  • Italian Night Promo

    Italian Night Promo

Another Arcosanti & Cosanti Foundation events that I designed promotional material for, Italian Night is an annual Arcosanti event featuring fine italian food, culture, and opera. The notable part of the promotional material for the event was the event's evening program, which unfolded "diagonally". While a challenge in terms of text layout, the unusual (but still intuitive) way the program worked caused it to be a bit of a favorite of the guests, with many keeping them as souvenirs. I can also say with confidence due to this project that I will never, ever, hand-fold print pieces again. I guess that's what they make machines for.

  • 90th Alumni Packet

    90th Alumni Packet

On June 21st, Arcosanti, an experimental sustainable city in the Arizona desert, held a celebration for the 90th birthday of its radical architect and founder, Paolo Soleri. An apprentice of Frank Lloyd Wright, Paolo Soleri's radical architectural theories and philosophy of urban planning had garnered worldwide respect and interest. For this occasion, which was as much a celebration of the Arcosanti project as its founder, I was brought on to design a number of promotional materials. The alumni packet was a folded packet designed to hold various maps, fliers, postcards, and notes by the hundreds of Arcosanti familiars and workshop alumni. Durable enough to last the time of the celebration and reunion (and also featuring the new Arcosanti logo), many alumni took the packet home as a souvenir of the event.

  • AVP Brochure

    AVP Brochure

avisualplanet.com, a subscription-based digital media service for non-profits (specifically churches), asked me to redesign their aging website in 2008. As part of the launch of that website, which at that time had one of the strongest userbases of stock media services in the religious non-profit sector, the small company asked me to create a brochure which could be sent to the current and past subscribers to inform them and shore up excitement about the new website, which also included many new features designed to match the competition in a growing market. The brochure was a good example of taking the original avisualplanet.com aesthetic and "updating" it to a new level, mirroring what users saw when they entered the new site.

  • Startalk Brochure

    Startalk Brochure

Startalk is a national government-funded education program aimed at high-school students and teachers. Startalk provides summer classes in lesser-taught foreign languages of "critical nature"—such as Arabic, Chinese, Urdu, Turkish, and other languages rarely seen in the typical school course selection. The National Foreign Language Center at the University of Maryland, the main contractor for the Startalk program, asked me to design a brochure aimed at the program's main audiences—students, their families, and teachers, to advertise the Startalk program. The brochure needed to be informative for these three sectors, yet still attractive enough to encourage students to engage in a summer cultural intensive.

  • MySys Promotional Materials

    MySys Promotional Materials

MySys was an integrated recordkeeping system employed by Laureate Education Inc., makers of online education institutions such as Walden University, to keep track of large amounts of student records, grades, and other pertinent information. To orient the faculty to this new system, Laureate asked me to design a small internal marketing campaign to correspond with the multi-week training sessions. This campaign included promotional posters, large hanging banners to decorate the training hall, desktops, and even cafeteria table toppers that resembled the MySys logo. Originally given only the name "MySys", some guidelines on what had to be produced, and a description, the project was essentially a blank canvas.

  • Jodi McLaren Album Artwork

    Jodi McLaren Album Artwork

Jodi McLaren, a local musician and friend, approached me for her debut album artwork. Entitled "Believe Me," I worked closely with Jodi to create a package for the album that reflected her professional and talented songwriting, but personable and soulful tone. I conducted photoshoots with her which provided material for the packaging, much of which was reflective of the album or songs—the back cover and CD face, for example, were created from the leather-bound journal in which many of original songs were written, and the Flur de Lis become the emblem for project and her website, which at the time I also created, and reflected the style of the packaging.
