State Geothermal Data

Project Description

Visit Live Site

The Department of Energy gave the Arizona Geological Survey a 24M grant in 2010 to conduct all 50 state geological surveys in uploading state-level data related to the United States' geothermal energy potential to a master database, called NGDS or National Geothermal Data System. Dubbed State Geothermal Data, my task was to create the grant project's website, which would become a project file repository, connection point for grant members, and public face for the multi-million dollar project. Running on the Concrete5 CMS, stategeothermaldata.org is an ongoing project as of this writing that utilizes social networking capabilities, file management, and general content management features, much of which is hidden from public view. It should be noted I was the lone web developer involved in the project, seeing the online project through its design stage all the way to its completion. Because it is an ongoing project, I recommend you look at the actual site, as there may be many interesting features that are not available in my local example here.

State Geothermal Data - Home

All fifty state geological surveys have committed, either actively or passively, to integrate their analog geothermal data to the NGDS.

We are pleased to announce that, as of this summer, 2010, all 50 state geological surveys have committed to delivering their at-risk data on geothermal data to the NGDS, either actively or in partnership with other state surveys.

This is a great step forward as we seek to proceed with the project in populating the NGDS with state-based data related to geothermal energy. Thanks to the staff and surveys that made this possible. We will keep you informed as to the status of the project's progress as we move forward.

The goal of State Geothermal Data (Recovery Act: State Geological Survey Contributions to the National Geothermal Data System) is to make large quantities of geothermal-relevant geosciences data held by the State Geological Surveys publicly available via the National Geothermal Data System (NGDS). The objective of the project is to populate, expand and enhance the NGDS by creating a national, sustainable, distributed, interoperable network of predominantly state geological survey-based data providers that will develop, collect, serve, and maintain geothermal relevant data that operates as an integral compliant component of NGDS.
